Merv Osborne Memorial Seat Dedication, 24 Nov 2020

On Tuesday 24 November, a group of relatives, friends, past and present committee members, and of course, volunteer gardeners, met to dedicate a new garden seat that has been donated by Merv’s widow, Jean Osborne, in his memory. Sadly Merv passed away earlier this year.

The seat has been installed on a concrete pad overlooking the garden where Merv was a volunteer for around 25 years. Short speeches were given by Jean, Merv's sister June, and Gordon Rudd spoke on behalf of the gardeners. The seat was formally gifted by Jean and accepted with gratitude by the current chair of the Cracroft Community Centre, Ursula Ryan.

We are very grateful for the work that Merv and all the volunteer gardeners have done in the past, helping to keep the lovely environment of the Old Stone House beautiful - a place to enjoy and an ideal setting for the house.

And thanks to Jean both for the seat and the lovely ceremony that accompanied the dedication.

Wedding at the Old Stone House, March 2020

The last wedding before lockdown was held on 6 March and by all accounts it was fabulous.  We have received the following wonderful testimonial from the bridal couple that is just too good not to share.  We look forward to welcoming people back to the Old Stone House as soon as possible so why not check us out!

“The microphone and speakers were amazing; the lanterns were the perfect lighting at night and everyone had a ball. There was the perfect amount of room for the band and for people to dance. I hope more people see the place for the amazing wedding venue that it is.

One thing that we really loved about the venue, was the nearness of locations for wedding photos. We chose to head up the Port Hills (a very short drive), we took photos at the top, then headed down. We stopped part way down at a park that has an olive grove and field, then we stopped off at the little reserve and took photos by the river.”

Summer Jazz - 4-7pm, Sundays, January and February 2020

Wasn't it wonderful! For 6 weeks over summer the Old Stone House played host to live music from The Mike Bickers Boptet, River City Jazzmen and the All Girl Mini Band.

It was a perfect way to spend a late Sunday afternoon - and the weather was mostly ideal (just a little too warm on one occasion) - and the food and beverages available were the perfect complement to the great music.

We hope to make this an annual event series, so look out for it again in 2021!

Christmas Carols - 5.30-7.30pm, Friday 13 December 2019

We simply could not have had a more perfect evening for this lovely event helping us to get in the Christmas spirit. It was a beautifully warm and still evening - a relative rarity in Christchurch.

Thanks to the brass quartet, led by Mike Bickers, for providing an anchor for the community singing. Thanks also for the great sausage sizzle, raising funds for Cashmere Primary, and Coffee Vice for delicious drinks.  And, yes, the cat was there too!

We hope to make this an annual event, so look out for it again this December!

Live Jazz - 4-6pm, Sunday, 17 November 2019

We celebrated our 40th anniversary in style with Live Jazz by the Mike Bickers Boptet and it was a lot of fun.  They were joined by Jess and Sarah from the Swingtown Rebels who added even more style. Then there was great food and drinks available.. what a swell party that was. (Even the cat came back.)

We have plans to do it all again in the not too distant future, so if you missed out this time round, be sure to book early next time.

Special thanks to Katie Jane Events - we could not have done it without you.

Open Day - 10am - 4pm, Saturday 19 October 2019

A massive thanks to everyone who came to our Open Day, especially the musical groups who performed throughout the day: Sinfonia, the Concert Band and the Big Band from the Christchurch School of Music, The Mix from Hillmorton High, The Opera Club and local pianist Winston Poh.

With wonderful weather, amazing musicians, and masses of visitors (yes, even including a curious cat), we were just so pleased to be able to open this lovely heritage venue, share its rich history, and show what it is capable of.
